Ben Harris Don't let the tags fool you into thinking this is all gloominess and defeated abjection. It's actually very abrasive and even quite heavy at times, which is a quality I never thought I'd use to describe a sad surf album. The vocals are also pretty mental. I personally rather like the wobbly neo-folkishness of track six "Mall Aid 2020" the most. Favorite track: Mall Aid 2020.

about

Goblin Time the Musical is a post-apocalyptic Dogme 95 inspired romp that follows the misadventures of Mitchell Dean as he searches for meaning in the burning ruins of Helltown (formerly known as Los Angeles). In Helltown, the sky rains with the flesh-searing ash of angels combusting in flight, almost everything is poisonous and the only form of sustenance and physical connection occurs during the bi-weekly blood orgies that leave consumers in an unnerving state of exhaustion but still desiring more. This is the wretch and wonder of Helltown.

But living regains significance for Mitchell Dean when he discovers a diary in an abandoned Hot Topic's lost and found. The entries are visceral. Poems and doodles from the before-everything-went-to-crap times evoke sorrow, passion and angst--emotions he thought circumstance had fried out of his heart. Moved by the diary's passages, Mitchell Dean begins transforming them into music (a music that mostly relies on power chords he learned from reading How To Ramones and Misfits guitar tablature books). He soon finds that his own experiences start weaving themselves into the lyrics. This is where the now of a post-fallout chaos converges with a past civilization on the brink of destruction. A vocabulary for life's woes emerges. Music brings back the dead. Roses weep. The goblins arise to sing their songs.

A lot of other things happen too. Telepathic mutant rats raise some hell, tomb fever nearly wipes out the grave dwellers, and the grim reaper gang bang ritual allows Mitchell Dean insights into the pleasures and pains of the universe's impermanent nature. Never a dull moment when you're living in Goblin Time the Musical.

Big thanks to filmmaker/musician/artist Mikiech Nichols for consistently offering his support and counsel during the creation process. Thanks Robert Borrego for giving the charred-bedroom sound of these 8-track recordings extra force with his mastering abilities. Also thank YOU for listening : )
